subframe part2
The frame has come along a little more, the end fixings are in so the seat unit can be bolted to the end. The sub frame fixing points are drilled with temporary bolts to secure it so I can work on the other bits. Have to go round a check welding and grind off any blobs. RED Tank or TLR Tank...The latter won't work with the vfr's airbox.

subframe task
Creating the rear subframe, first attempt! tube at the back for rear seat mount.This is by no way finished, I have to house the battery,rar brake master cylinder, fuel pump, various relays,and the cdi.Not forgetting the exhaust mount but this depends on what I use...the right hand remus or a full race system which usually goes on the left.

first impression of full fairing and seat
First check on if the fairing basically fits in position. Looks good on first impression,the main stand bracket will be removed giving some more clearance, the front down pipes just touch so a little filing. Bracket positions are accessible. The front nose cone will need lifting up a touch to avoid the clipons touching.

new blog and new project!
Well Ive started a new blog because I've started a new project while the other( cbr640 blogspot ) is on-going but you can link across as its in the same shed! However Ive since swapped the fireblade forks and yokes over to my new project as i see this progressing at a far quicker pace.
Ive bought a vfr750l 1990 from kempton park bike jumble for a small fee. Its a category c write off. Looking at it I could see that it was a good opportunity to create a track bike /racer from this. The engine sounded sweet, no clunks or strange noises, a typical v4 gear driven cam example. Its done 57K which is about average for a 1990 machine. It must have been standing for a long time outside because corrosion had taken its toll on ferrous parts and given a white powdery oxidation on the aluminium. The front sub frame had been bent from the left side, the headlights were intact but the fairing on the ride had shattered. Once home I quickly took off all external frames, fairings to check out the forks and yokes. The damage was'nt too bad but I could see that to replace all the damaged items would have cost a lot to be put back on the road and the bike is 20 years old.
So ive put the cbr oh hold and started on this project. Even though the cbr engine is ready Ive got a lot to do( see other blog). In the meantime I can get this bike coverted because most of it is there. I also really like the sound of the v4 vfr engine's firing order!
So far I stripped it down to its engine in a rolling chassis, put the fireblade 2000 forks in and been measuring up for the back sub frame. The original sub frame is an ugly heavy monster. I'm going to create a simple frame to allow a single seat unit to be attached, along with brackets for wiring,rear brake cyclinder,exhaust and battery holder.
Initially I've drained the oil and coolant, removed various pipes, hoses and wiring loom. steps to do now would be to get the rear frame, fairing position( choose fairing to it) front fairing bracket, ride height and position, forks position- measuring/mirroring with a current superbike. Once thats complete drop the engine and strip to re-condition.( I'm not going to tune it a little, may be polish to ports and combustion chambers/balance them, dynojet it, check the valve seats, valve clearances. Inspect the bores and pistons if it needs more attention then ill do it but I'm confident that the bottom half should be fine. Trying to keep to a tight budget is crucial but if the engine requires a complete overhall then Ill do it.
I try and do a little often but the shed is small and its getting cold in there.
